Introduction

Named after a very popular brand of video codec, DivX Total is a public torrent tracker that allows users to download multiple types of files. However, as the site’s name suggests, DivX Total does seem to skew more towards video torrents than anything else. So, if you are looking for a new go-to torrent tracker for all of your free indie TV and film needs, DivX Total is definitely a site that deserves to be on your radar.

However, this site does not only specialize in video media. In addition to free indie HD movies, TV series, and 3D movies, DivX Total also indexes free indie music and open-source software torrent files as well. It may not be the torrent site with the widest array of file types available, but sometimes there is value in a site specializing in one thing in particular.

The only torrent site for indie movies and TV you’ll ever need? – How does the saying go? … You can be a jack of all trades, but a master of none? Well, DivX Total seeks to be a master of providing high-quality free indie movie and TV torrents, even if a few other categories may be missing. That’s okay, though, there are plenty of other sites that cater to the file types that cannot be found on DivX Total. No need to worry!

That being said, when a torrent indexer such as this one does focus all of its energy on just a couple of kinds of content, you tend to expect great things from it as it pertains to providing those files. I expect, for instance, to never be unable to find a free indie movie or TV show on a site like this, that offers primarily free indie movies and TV shows. And we’ll explore in more depth in a bit just how effective DivX Total is at providing a large selection of free indie movie and series titles.

Of course, variety and high numbers of torrents are not the only things that I look for in a torrent indexer or torrent tracker. These sites need to deliver on all fronts in order to be considered the best torrent sites of 2020. Just as important as the quality and quantity of the content that these sites feature is how safe they are. In fact, to some, this is infinitely more important. Torrents, as we all know, do not have the greatest reputation when it comes to safety measures. Some trackers, however, take extra precautions to help you feel more assured than others.

Verified torrents – This is done in a variety of ways, but one of the most common and secure ways that I have seen it done is through a system of torrent verification. Any time I see a green checkmark next to a torrent file, especially on a public torrent site, I immediately breathe a sigh of relief. This means that the torrent file (and its contents) have been checked, scanned, and verified – either by a bot or a staff member. If a torrent index site indicates that its torrents have been verified, you can usually rest easy and download with fewer worries.

Comments – Another common means of providing security measures is to allow users to self-police each other. And enabling comments on every torrent file is the best way to do this. With comments, users can alert peers to a potentially corrupt or malicious file. This way, you know to skip it. I have even seen users run scans themselves and call out hidden trojans, adware, etc. This is one of the most underrated features, I think, in a torrent site when it comes to safety.

Always use a VPN and antivirus – Last but not least, you can take measures yourself to protect your data and your privacy. I always advise people to use a VPN when they torrent to protect themselves from hackers.

Last but not least, you need a solid antivirus program when torrenting. This way any file that you download can be scanned and you will know if there is malware present. Another option, too, is to upgrade to a premium version of many torrent clients, as they will come with a built-in antivirus of their own.

So, now that we have gotten all of the necessary safety topics out of the way, let’s see how DivX Total stacks up, in terms of safety but also in terms of how effective, user friendly, mobile friendly, features rich, and well designed the site is!

Design

I am going to be completely honest. From the moment that I landed on DivX Total’s home page for the first time, I was unimpressed. The site has a very bland aesthetic to it. There is nothing experiential or responsive about it. It’s a very data heavy site … which is not uncommon for a torrent index site … but I have also seen similar sites that put some effort into presenting themselves in professional, sleek, modern, and experiential ways. So, DivX Total is a bit of a letdown – especially when you take into account the fact that it specializes in indie movies and TV series; a more graphic or animated site design would probably be best from a functional standpoint as well.

Home page – I will say this, though, the site is impeccably organized. Perhaps this is just a matter of personal taste. I am willing to bet that more “type-A” personalities than me will find this site to be satisfying. At the very top of the home page, you’ll find a handy and user-friendly site menu bar. Here, you can choose between all of the different types of content offered on the site: free indie Films, indie TV, indie HD Movies, indie 3D Movies, indie DVDR Movies, open-source Programs, Others, and indie Music.

On the left-hand side of the page, is an even more in-depth browsing mechanism. Sprawling vertically the left side of the page, browse by specific genres within each media category. Just collapse each file type to see a long list of genres, meticulously organized for convenient and user-friendly browsing.

Inner pages – Each of the torrent info pages is neat and easy to read. However, there is not enough here in my opinion. Again, as a site that specializes in free indie movies, I want DivX Total to go further.

I am pleased to note that there are comments on DivX Total. However, unfortunately, they do not seem to be as active as I would prefer.

Content and Features

DivX Total does not offer much in the way of features. It is a fairly straightforward site. Upload and download free indie movies, free indie TV shows, open-source software, and free indie music. That being said, this site does have a wealth of genres available and thousands upon thousands of torrents to choose from. So, what it lacks in unique user or community features, it more than makes up for in quantity and quality – as there is a definite emphasis on HD quality content here.

That being said, I would have liked to see more features – particularly a verified torrents system. Torrents on this site are not verified. So, unfortunately, you are left to download largely at your own risk.

Mobile and Desktop Experience

I am very pleased to report that DivX Total seems to have been optimized for mobile devices. A  lot of torrent indexes and torrent trackers don’t go through the trouble of reformatting the layout for mobile devices. This is not the case with DivX Total at all – it looks great on my phone screen. In fact, I think I may prefer the mobile design to the desktop one.

However, both versions of the site do suffer ads. They aren’t the most invasive or the most persistent ads that I have ever seen, but they are enough to be a detriment to the enjoyability of the user experience, nonetheless.
